HOW TO MAKE CARIBBEAN FRIED SALTFISH/SALTED FISH

This “Fried Saltfish” is a well-known Caribbean dish. This recipe is usually served with “Fried Bake” or “Dumplings” for breakfast. Some serve this recipe with other sides such as dhal and many others. There are a variety of recipes for “Fried Saltfish”. Today I am sharing the “Fried Saltfish” recipe that I grew up eating. This recipe is full of flavors and spices. This a very easy recipe to prepare.



The ingredients for this recipe are:

1 pack of dry salted fish or salted codfish

1 medium tomato chopped

1 Tbsp of Vegetable oil

1/3 Tsp of Onion powder

1/3 Tsp of Garlic powder

3-4 Garlic cloves crushed

1/4 Piece of a medium onion of your choice

2 Tsps of Green seasoning

1/2 Cup of white distilled vinegar

Prep:

Cut the saltfish in half for a serving of 2

Place the saltfish in a bowl

Add warm water to cover the saltfish

Add vinegar

Soak for 1 hour

Rinse under running water

Place salted fish in a pot filled with water to cover

the saltfish

Boil saltfish uncovered on medium heat

for 15 mn to remove some of the salt that

was used to dry the fish

While the salted fish is boiling, finely chop

the vegetables and set them aside

When the water turns white or cloudy

Discard water and replace it with fresh water

Discard water and lightly rinse under running water

Place the saltfish on a plate

Remove the skin and the middle bone

as well as the other fine visible bones

Place the cleaned saltfish into a bowl

Shred the saltfish and also remove any remaining

fine bones that were missed

Add a few teaspoons of green seasoning to the

shredded saltfish

I am not adding salt since there will still be some

remaining salt in the salted fish even after boiling the

salted fish

Preheat oil in a frying pan on medium heat

Add the onion and garlic powder to boost the flavor

Mix all the ingredients together

Cooking:

Add crushed garlic, chopped tomatoes, and

chopped onions to the preheated oil

Cook on medium heat until the vegetables are

translucent

Add seasoned shredded salted fish and mix evenly

with the sauteed vegetables

Cook for 3 mn since the salted fish is precooked

Serve with bake or dumplings
