HOW TO MAKE FRIED BAKE AT HOME
I wanted to share this Caribbean breakfast recipe. Bake is a fried dough that is usually served along with fried saltfish. Bake is well known in the Caribbean countries as well as other countries like Guyana. It is also called a float in some countries. There are a variety of recipes depending on the country or culture. I am sharing the bake recipe that I grew up eating.
Ingredients:
2 Cups of unbleached flour + 1 additional for flouring
1/3 Teaspoon of salt
2 Tablespoons of sugar
4 Tablespoons of butter or margarine at room
temperature
3/4 Cup of warm water
2 Teaspoons of Baking powder
Prep:
Mix all the dry ingredients
Add the butter
Add water gradually
Mix all the ingredients to form a sticky dough
Add 1/2 cup of flour and mix
Until the dough is no longer sticky
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface
Knead until smooth into a ball
Allow the dough to rest for 30 minutes
Use a dough cutter to cut the dough in half
Cut each half into 4 pieces
That’s a total of 8 pieces of dough
Knead each piece of dough into a smooth ball
on a lightly floured surface
And set them aside
Cover the rolled dough with a clean towel
Allow it to rise for an additional 30 minutes
Preheat 1/2 of a skillet with some vegetable oil
for deep frying
Grab a rolled dough and use your figures
to flatten the dough into a 1/2 inch thick circle
Gently slide it into the preheated oil
Repeat the same step with a second rolled dough
Flip the first dough and watch it rise
Continue to flip the bakes often
Until they are is golden brown on both sides
While removing the bakes from the skillet
allow some of that excess oil to drip into the skillet
Then place the dough in the pan lined with paper
towel to continue to remove the excess oil
Repeat the same steps with the remaining
rolled dough.
I enjoyed my “Fried Bakes” with some “Fried Saltfish”
Enjoy!
